Transform Global Gender and Climate Policy: Join UN Women as a Research Specialist
Are you ready to shape the future of gender equality and climate change on a global scale? Imagine having the power to influence policies that can protect our planet while uplifting women and girls worldwide. This is more than just a job; it’s a mission to create lasting change
The Mission: Bridging Gender Equality and Climate Action
In a world where climate change impacts every corner of the globe, women and girls are often the most vulnerable. However, they are also key agents of change. UN Women’s latest initiative is to produce the upcoming edition of the Progress of the World’s Women report, focusing on the critical intersection of gender equality and climate change. This report will offer a fresh perspective on how gender-responsive policies can lead to more effective climate action.
Why This Role Matters
Climate change isn’t just an environmental issue; it’s a human rights issue, with gender equality at the heart of it. Women are disproportionately affected by climate change, yet they are also pivotal in driving solutions. The Feminist Climate Justice: A Framework for Action paper by UN Women provides the foundation for this report, offering a conceptual framework that places gender equality at the center of climate action.
Your role as the Research Specialist will be to transform this framework into a comprehensive global report that will serve as a blueprint for gender-responsive climate policies. You’ll also pilot the gender equality and climate policy scorecard, ensuring it accurately reflects realities on the ground and provides actionable insights for policymakers worldwide.
What You’ll Do: Key Responsibilities
- Develop the Outline of the Global Report: Collaborate with internal and external experts to develop an outline for the Progress of the World’s Women report, ensuring coverage of critical aspects of gender equality and climate change.
- Create a Commissioning Strategy: Identify new data analysis opportunities and work with leading researchers to produce background papers and data that will inform the final report.
- Lead the Gender Equality and Climate Policy Scorecard Pilot: Work with UN Women’s research team to test and refine the scorecard’s methodology, analyzing National Determined Contributions (NDCs) and global climate finance data.
- Engage with Stakeholders: Collaborate with partners, experts, and stakeholders to ensure the report and scorecard are informed by the latest research and best practices.
The Ideal Candidate: Skills and Experience
- Educational Background: A Master’s degree in Social Sciences, International Relations, Political/Development Studies, or a related field with a strong gender component is required. A PhD in a relevant area, particularly in gender and climate change/environment, would be a strong asset.
- Research and Policy Experience: At least 7 years of experience in research and/or policy work, with a strong focus on gender equality and climate change/environment. A proven track record of peer-reviewed publications in this area is highly desirable.
- Analytical Skills: Experience in analyzing climate change policies from a gender perspective is essential. Familiarity with NDCs and global climate finance mechanisms is crucial.
- Network and Stakeholder Engagement: Experience working within research networks and engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders, including international organizations and multilateral climate negotiations.
- Language Skills: Fluency in English is required, with knowledge of another UN official language considered an asset.
