Mandate of the Department:
The UCO Brazil leads and coordinates the UN system response in Brazil towards ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030, focusing on equity and equality within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UCO Brazil promotes effective use of strategic information, strengthens community capacities, and engages with national partners and policymakers.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities:
Reporting within the matrix management structure of UCO Brazil and the RST LAC, the Officer for Advocacy and Communication will implement the global advocacy and communication strategy at the country level in Brazil. Responsibilities include:
1. Advocacy:
- Develop country-specific advocacy strategies for national policy events and other circumstances to support the AIDS response.
- Act as the primary focal point for planning and facilitating advocacy and communication activities.
- Manage country advocacy activities, including the development of communication and advocacy materials.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to promote UNAIDS’ goals at the country level.
- Engage high-level personalities and Goodwill Ambassadors in UNAIDS work.
- Provide inputs into regional and global advocacy and communication strategies.
2. Communication:
- Manage and coordinate press conferences, media briefings, and interviews with UNAIDS officials.
- Develop and pitch news stories in mainstream and social media about UNAIDS work in the country.
- Develop media partnerships and provide media training as appropriate.
- Handle media management and crisis communications.
3. Content Development and Management:
- Draft briefing packages, talking points, and key messages for communication and advocacy campaigns.
- Produce content for the country office’s social and digital media assets.
- Ensure the update of communication libraries with contributions from regional and global teams.
Perform other duties as required.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
- Advanced university degree in communications, journalism, public relations, public/business administration, social sciences, or a related field.
- A relevant first university degree and 4 years of relevant work experience will be considered as equivalent for internal candidates only.

You may also be eligible for:
Functional/Technical Knowledge/Skills:
- Advanced writing, editing, and communication skills, including audiovisual creation and editing.
- Experience working with media and a variety of institutional stakeholders.
- Understanding of the UN system, development issues, and the HIV epidemic.
- Strong interpersonal, representational, and negotiation skills.
- Convening and coordination skills.
Experience:
- At least 2 years of experience in media, civil society organizations, government, the United Nations system, or similar in advocacy and communication strategy development and implementation.
- Experience in advocating, campaigning, networking, and public relations.
- Desirable: Experience in facilitation, advocacy, project management, social justice, global health issues, HIV, or similar.
Languages:
- Proficiency in English and Portuguese.
- Desirable: Knowledge of additional UN official languages.
Additional Information:
- Only nationals of Brazil are eligible to apply.
