Work Location

The internship will be based in New York, USA. The primary work location is the United Nations Headquarters, providing a unique opportunity to engage directly with a variety of UN departments and operations.

Expected Duration

The internship is designed for a duration of 6 months, providing an extensive period for the intern to gain substantial experience and contribute meaningfully to the team’s projects and initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) plays a critical role in providing leadership, operational support, and oversight for the United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS) globally. UNDSS is at the forefront of security risk management, ensuring the safe and effective delivery of United Nations programmes and activities in some of the most complex and challenging environments worldwide. By maximizing resources and implementing innovative security solutions, UNDSS supports the United Nations in achieving its mission and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This internship opportunity is within the Crisis Management and Strategic Planning Unit (CMSPU) of UNDSS. The intern will report directly to the Officer-in-Charge of CMSPU. This is a unique and valuable opportunity to work with a diverse, dynamic team and gain hands-on experience in strategic and action planning within a global organization. The internship is UNPAID and is full-time, requiring interns to work five days per week (35 hours). While the position is designed to be conducted in person, it can be adapted to accommodate hybrid arrangements or part-time (20 hours per week) on an exceptional basis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor Open-Source Media: Conduct daily research to identify threats and risks affecting UNHQ Operations. This involves staying up-to-date with current global events and analyzing their potential impact on United Nations operations.
  • Prepare Presentations: Assist in the preparation of daily presentations that highlight threats and risks to the service. These presentations are crucial for informing decision-making processes and ensuring preparedness.
  • Draft Newsletters: Contribute to the preparation and drafting of quarterly newsletters for the service, summarizing key findings, updates, and strategic insights.
  • Data Collection and Reporting: Collect data from various departments and draft statistical reports. This task requires attention to detail and the ability to synthesize large amounts of information into concise reports.
  • Support Strategic Initiatives: Assist in the development and implementation of strategic initiatives and projects. This may involve project planning, coordination, and monitoring progress.
  • Meeting Participation: Attend relevant meetings and workshops, providing summaries and key takeaways to the team. This includes documenting important discussions and action points.
  • Perform Other Duties: Undertake additional tasks as required by the team, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to contribute to various aspects of the unit’s work.

Qualifications/Special Skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, candidates must meet one of the following conditions:

  • Education:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
    • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above). Official written proof from the university supporting one of the above possibilities must be attached to the Inspira application.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in standard software applications, including MS Office 365 or similar.
    • Demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
    • Ability to successfully interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, demonstrating understanding and tolerance of differing opinions and views.
    • Strong ability to manage multiple tasks and adhere to deadlines.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare detailed reports and presentations.
    • Willingness to take on varied tasks and adapt to changing priorities.

Languages

  • Required: Fluency in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. The official languages of the United Nations Secretariat are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish.
