Senior Desktop Publishing Assistant -The Global Education Monitoring Report (GEM Report) is an editorially independent, evidence-based annual report that monitors progress in education within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The GEM Report is widely recognized as an indispensable resource supporting the achievement of SDG 4, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning for all by 2030.

Overview of the Functions of the Post
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the authority of the Assistant Director-General for Education (ADG/ED), the guidance of the GEM Report Director, the supervision of the GEM Report Senior Project Officer (Communication), and the oversight of the GEM Report Team Lead (Partnerships and Operations), the Senior Desktop Publishing Assistant will:
Desktop Publishing Support
- Organize and coordinate desktop publishing workflows with internal clients, external agencies, and partners.
- Contribute to strategic planning and ideation of GEM Report publications.
- Plan and deliver visually appealing and professional reports, papers, and brochures using industry-standard software.
- Ensure adherence to style guidelines, consistent formatting, and branding.
- Support production of print and digital GEM Report publications.
- Stay updated with desktop publishing trends and tools.
Graphic Design
- Design and produce infographics, charts, and diagrams.
- Coordinate with the design team to develop appealing covers and layouts.
- Provide technical guidance on desktop publishing software and best practices.
Quality Assurance
- Implement quality control measures, including proofreading.
- Conduct comprehensive quality checks on final outputs.
Contracts Management
- Support planning, establishment, implementation, and monitoring of production-related contracts.
- Support planning and monitoring of publication budgets.

Required Qualifications
Education
- Completed secondary, technical, or vocational school.
Work Experience
- Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in digital publishing, including desktop publishing, graphic design, copy-editing, proofreading, and typographical layout.
- Demonstrated experience in web-based content management.
- Experience with multilingual content and publications.
- Experience in procurement and contracts management.
Skills and Competencies
- Proficiency in industry-standard desktop publishing software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
- Knowledge of layout design, typesetting, and formatting for print and digital media.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Client-oriented and problem-solving attitude.
- Ability to work independently and with good judgment.
Languages
- Excellent knowledge of French and English (oral and written).
Desirable Qualifications
Education
- Advanced university degree in publishing, project management, communication, or a related field.
Technical Knowledge
- Knowledge of UNESCO financial regulations and administrative procedures.
Languages
- Very good knowledge of Spanish.
- Good knowledge of another official United Nations language (Arabic, Chinese, or Russian).
