Overview of the Functions of the Post

Internship- Communications And Public Engagement -UNESCO The Division for Communications and Public Engagement, reporting directly to the Office of the Director-General, implements the Organization’s communication strategy. It coordinates and delivers communications (both external and internal) for the sectors and Field Offices. Responsibilities include managing content for the website, press relations, social media channels, campaigns, public events, media partnerships, and publications.

Interns will assist in various projects to enhance visibility of UNESCO’s activities across multiple platforms.

Tasks

Social Media:

  • Assist in preparing communication and social media campaigns.
  • Draft, translate, or edit social media content.
  • Create graphics for social media and other digital platforms.
  • Help with on-site interview filming and postproduction.
  • Create newsletters.
  • Schedule editorial content and analyze social media metrics.

Web:

  • Assist in creating new websites.
  • Translate or edit content.
  • Draft technical and editorial documentation.
  • Upload content to websites or content management tools like Trello.
  • Conduct summary/analytical tasks to assess audience impact.
  • Support SEO report creation.
  • Edit web content and design graphics.
  • Maintain and improve the web ecosystem (programming and sysops skills required).

Press:

  • Translate press releases and media advisories.
  • Prepare daily press briefings.
  • Prepare and send press releases; update mailing lists.
  • Support special on-site events.

Photo:

  • Participate in shooting and post-production.
  • Organize and catalogue images.

Publishing and Branding:

  • Provide editorial and technical assistance on publication projects.
  • Conduct photo research for publications and brochures.
  • Contribute to UNESCO branding projects.
  • Assist with IPR issues including open access, co-publishing, and licensing agreements.
  • Support internal quality control, including checking author contracts.

UNESCO Campuses:

  • Assist in organizing thematic conferences or debates for schools worldwide.
  • Research schools and contribute to database enrichment.
  • Develop communication strategies and prepare content for social networks and the UNESCO Campus webpage.

Green Citizens Initiative:

  • Draft articles for the Green Citizens platform and newsletter.
  • Improve SEO for digital communication of the campaign.
  • Develop relationships with universities and student associations.
  • Assist in communication tasks related to partners.
  • Create visibility reports (website, social media, press).
  • Find speaking opportunities for Green Citizens.

UNESCO Courier (Magazine):

  • Assist in selecting, editing, and publishing articles, pictures, and videos.
  • Review and translate existing articles.
  • Communicate with partners and facilitate readership.
  • Develop a distribution network.
  • Assist in promoting and marketing the magazine.

Required Qualifications

  • Age: At least 20 years old.
  • Academic Qualifications:
    • Enrolled in a graduate program (Master’s, PhD, or equivalent).
    • Recently graduated (within 12 months) with a Master’s or PhD.
  • Languages: Excellent command of English or French; working knowledge of the other is an asset.
  • Computer Skills: Excellent knowledge of computer systems and office-related software.
  • Team Player: Ability to work well in a team and adapt to an international working environment.
  • Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s degree in Communication, Journalism, Digital Media, Translation, Intellectual Property Law, Environment.
  • Languages: Excellent knowledge of another UN official language (Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Chinese).
  • Skills and Competencies:
    • Good communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Creativity and attention to detail.
    • Competency in Photoshop.
    • Knowledge of Drupal.

Benefits and Entitlements

  • Compensation: UNESCO does not remunerate interns.
  • Leave: Interns are entitled to 2.5 days of leave per month.

Selection and Recruitment Process

  • The UNESCO Internships Programme is open in January and July each year.
  • Candidates apply to vacancies matching their expertise and domain.
  • Selected candidates remain in the talent pool for six months.
  • Those not selected will need to reapply for new vacancies.
