The Intern – Public Information is with the Outreach Division of the Department of Global Communications, specifically within the NGO Relations, Advocacy, and Special Events Section. The Advocacy part of the team focuses on promoting partnerships with the global entertainment industry, including film, television, documentaries, new media, sports, and music, as well as with Civil Society Organizations. The selected candidates will report to the Chief of the Section.

Work Location

  • The internship is designed to be full-time and in-person in New York, but can be adjusted based on the request of the successful candidate.

Expected Duration

  • 6 months, starting from September 2, 2024.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities

Interns may be tasked with a variety of functions, including but not limited to:

  1. Project Support:
    • Assist with projects involving external partners from the entertainment and sports industries, including drafting background materials and taking meeting notes.
  2. Social Media Monitoring:
    • Monitor and report on social media activities of the Messengers of Peace and other UN influencers, and collate metrics on advocacy engagement.
  3. Event Planning and Organization:
    • Assist in planning and organizing special events, filming projects, briefings for Civil Society Organizations, and other in-person activities at UN Headquarters.
  4. Content Creation:
    • Draft, format, edit, and post original content for the section’s websites.
    • Assist in drafting communications materials, including concept notes, talking points, presentations, and press releases.
  5. Support to Advocacy Initiatives:
    • Assist the Chief of the Section with drafting memos, talking points, or researching to prepare for advocacy-related projects.

Qualifications/Special Skills

Education:

  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
    • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
    • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Experience:

  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience but should be studying in a field closely related to public information, communications, or international relations.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
  • Ability to draft emails, publications, or create social media posts is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of an additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an advantage.

  • Internship Conditions: Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions.
