UNEP FI’s mission is to inspire, inform, and enable financial institutions to enhance people’s quality of life without compromising future generations. The initiative supports regional program implementation across Africa, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America & the Caribbean, and North America, covering areas such as climate, nature, pollution & circular economy, the SDGs & impact, and social issues.   1. Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance (AOA): Launched in 2019, consisting of more than 70 institutional asset owners.
  2. Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA): Launched in 2021 with over 115 banks, predominantly PRB signatories setting ambitious climate targets.
  3. Net-Zero Insurance Alliance (NZIA): Launched in 2021, including 30 leading insurers representing about 12% of world premiums, working towards the transition to net-zero insurance.

In this context, UNOPS aims to provide comprehensive operational support to UNEP for the project titled “UNEP Finance Initiative.”

Functional Responsibilities

Under the day-to-day supervision of the Head of the Unit at the UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), the incumbent will oversee global communications management and events planning. The role encompasses implementing a global communications strategy with clear objectives, messaging, and transmission channels for each target audience. The incumbent will maintain a robust brand for UNEP FI, ensuring impactful and suitable communications focusing on messaging for key stakeholder groups (financial institutions, members, governments, etc.). They will also develop and execute an effective media strategy and manage a team of communications professionals.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Develop, Plan, and Execute Digital Meetings and Events:
    • Ensure a high-quality experience for all participants.
    • Work closely with internal stakeholders to identify event objectives, target audiences, and messaging for each event.
  2. Coordinate with External Vendors, Speakers, and Partners:
    • Ensure seamless execution of events.
    • Manage event budgets and timelines, ensuring all events are delivered within budget and on schedule.
  3. Develop and Implement Communication Strategies:
    • Focus on messaging for key stakeholder groups.
    • Coordinate content for event websites, social media, and UNEP FI communications material to build visibility and increase interest among stakeholders.
  4. Coordinate Internal UN Communications Processes:
    • Establish key tracking and performance indicators.
    • Review web metrics and social media reports for events.
  5. Manage UNEP FI’s Social Media Channels:
    • Write and post content related to events.

    • Support coordination on communications and publications processes with UNEP and UN HQ related to events.
  7. Lead and Support Team Members on Press Engagement:
    • Maintain a high-quality media database and media monitoring reports as needed.

Education, Experience, and Language Requirements

Education:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environment, sustainable development, communications, marketing, international relations, social studies, or a related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two (2) years of experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration, or related areas.
  • Previous experience working with the private finance sector, including banks, institutional investors, and others, is desired.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing work programs for stakeholders in an international organization setting or with the finance sector is desired.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
