Org. Setting and Reporting:
United Nations Secretary-General initiated a comprehensive reform on January 1, 2019, to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the UN Development System in alignment with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This reform included the transformation of the Development Coordination Office (DCO) into a standalone coordination office within the UN Secretariat, tasked with managing and overseeing the resident coordinator system under the United Nations Sustainable Development Group (UNSDG). The Senior Sustainable Development Officer will be situated in the United Nations Development Coordination Office (UNDCO) in New York, reporting to the ASG of DCO with guidance from the Deputy Director.

Responsibilities:
The Senior Sustainable Development Officer will be responsible for various duties, including leading the development and implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Group, providing substantive support to UNSDG-related interagency and intergovernmental processes, supervising the preparation of written outputs for UNSDG Principals, advising UNDCO Director and Senior Management on UNSDG strategic priorities, conducting outreach and coordination activities with UNSDG focal points, ensuring effective utilization and development of staff, and staying abreast of emerging trends related to the UNSDG.

Competencies:
The ideal candidate should possess professionalism in applying sustainable development theories and approaches, analytical skills to identify and resolve issues, teamwork abilities to collaborate effectively with colleagues, planning and organizing skills to set clear goals and prioritize activities, managing performance capabilities to delegate responsibilities and provide feedback, and leadership qualities to empower others and drive change. Additionally, the candidate should demonstrate proficiency in English, with knowledge of another UN official language being advantageous.

Education:
Candidates should hold an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in sustainable development, economics, public policy, public administration, finance, natural resources management, engineering, law, social sciences, or related fields. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with relevant experience may be accepted. Completion of degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is advantageous.

Work Experience:
Applicants should have a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in project or program management related to sustainable development issues, with at least three years of experience in providing policy support/advice to UN entities and/or Member States regarding the RC System at various levels. Experience in UN inter-agency policy-making, programming, strategy development, field experience in development cooperation, and managing multicultural teams is desirable.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is required for the position, with knowledge of another UN official language being advantageous.

Assessment:
The evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise followed by a competency-based interview.
