The Opportunity:
Plan International recognizes the unique safety and security risks faced by its staff and associates operating in or traveling to hostile and complex environments. To ensure the safety and well-being of its personnel, the organization is seeking experienced Safety and Security Specialists and Advisors to join an external roster. These specialists will be available for short-notice deployment (within 72 hours) to various high-risk countries where Plan International conducts humanitarian operations. Successful candidates will play a crucial role in gap filling, supporting scale-up efforts, and building capacity in inclusive safety and security management. Assignments may vary in duration, with opportunities for deployment lasting up to six months.
Responsibilities:
As part of the Safety and Security Specialist roster, candidates will be expected to:
- Utilize a deep conceptual understanding of security risk management and risk assessment processes.
- Demonstrate previous experience working in high-risk areas, including disasters and fragile and conflict-affected states.
- Apply expertise gained from working in international NGOs to provide technical support and oversight to security programs.
- Conduct comprehensive security risk assessments and develop strategies to mitigate identified risks.
- Coordinate with stakeholders, including peer NGOs and UN actors, to ensure effective representation and collaboration in the field.
- Negotiate humanitarian access and develop strategies to overcome challenges in complex operating environments.
- Demonstrate an understanding of humanitarian principles and uphold ethical standards in all security-related activities.

Requirements:
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A solid educational background with relevant certifications or training in security risk management or a related field.
- Extensive experience in security management, preferably in humanitarian or development contexts.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess security threats and devise appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with fluency in English. Proficiency in an additional language (e.g., French, Arabic, or Spanish) is desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to rapidly changing situations.
- Commitment to Plan International’s values and principles, including a dedication to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Location:
This role will involve up to 60% deployment to Plan International’s country programs, with the remaining time spent in a home-based capacity. Flexible arrangements may be considered for candidates with the pre-existing right to work and live in countries where Plan International has an office.
