UNU Institute in Macau: UNU Macau is a research institute focusing on the intersections of digital technology and sustainable development. The institute conducts policy-relevant research, generating solutions to address challenges outlined in the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Situated in Macau SAR, a dynamic region within the Greater Bay Area (GBA), UNU Macau collaborates with technological giants and private sector companies, enhancing the impact of its work.
Responsibilities
Research Implementation:
- Develop and align research activities with the Institute’s Strategic Plan (2021-2025).
- Collaborate with the research team for policy impact at various levels (international, regional, national).
Resource Mobilization and Grant Management:
- Build partnerships and seek fundraising opportunities.
- Contribute to fundraising efforts and meet strategic plan targets.
- Manage grants, ensure compliance with donor agreements, and timely submission of reports.
Research Quality and Ethics:
- Draft periodic reports on research activities.
- Produce diverse written outputs such as academic papers, policy briefs, and UN reports.
- Support the Communications team with research outputs for social media.
Training and Education Projects:
- Develop and deliver training courses for diverse audiences.
- Contribute to creating a joint master’s degree program.
- Coordinate the UNU AI Network, developing new partnerships.
Communication and Outreach:
- Present research at high-impact conferences and events.
- Organize Institute events in line with research priorities.

Qualifications
Education and Certifications:
- Doctoral degree (PhD) in computer science, AI, computational social science, HCI, data science, or related fields.
Areas of Expertise:
- AI impacts on SDGs, sustainability, AI for Good, agent-based modelling, AI governance, ethics, and public policy.
Experience:
- At least 3 years of post-doctoral research experience.
- Strong background in AI and relevant fields.
- Proven academic publication record.
- Ability to work in an international environment with respect for diversity.
Desirable:
- Experience with diverse stakeholders and the UN system.
- Multidisciplinary team experience.
Language Requirements:
- Fluency in English with strong communication and presentation skills.
- Knowledge of another UN official language is an asset.
Remuneration
- Locally tax-exempted salary starting at USD $36,347 annually.
- Benefits include 30 days annual leave and health insurance.
- Travel costs covered for international appointees.
- Rental subsidy available for relocation to Macau.
Contract Details
- Initial contract duration: 1 year.
- Possibility of renewal based on performance.
- Combined contract duration may not exceed 6 years.
- Mandatory retirement age for PSA holders: 65 years.
- Expected start date: As soon as possible.
