The Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA) is excited to offer a Graduate Research Intern position within its newly established User Insights Lab (UIL). This initiative envisions a world where clean cooking is the unambiguously preferred way to cook. The UIL combines the latest thinking in consumer insights, behavioral sciences, and design to support enterprises, non-profits, and governments in delivering more value to customers and driving exponential growth in clean cooking adoption.
The UIL collaborates with key stakeholders, including clean cooking enterprises, policymakers, and program implementers, to design and develop solutions, policies, and programs informed by deep insights into the preferences, constraints, and behaviors of end users. The Lab employs consumer research, behavioral science, data analytics, user-centered design, action-based research, and rapid prototyping to generate new evidence, tools, and capabilities, supporting a transformational shift to user-centered innovation in the clean cooking sector.
Job Description
Role and Responsibilities:
The Summer 2024 Graduate Research Intern will play a crucial role during a formative period for the UIL. The intern will support the team by analyzing and synthesizing quantitative and qualitative data related to clean cooking customers and potential customers. This includes:
- Literature Reviews and Evidence Synthesis: Conduct literature reviews to summarize the evidence base behind UIL hypotheses and projects. Analyze quantitative and qualitative data, and perform secondary “deep dive” analyses of UIL project data.
- Project Involvement: Participate in initial projects related to cookstove labeling, subsidy design, behavior change campaigns, and social network dynamics. Additional projects will be co-created with the intern based on their expertise and interests.
- Development of Artifacts: Create compelling presentations of data and insights (e.g., customer archetypes, problem mapping) for enterprise and public sector stakeholders.
- Thought Leadership: Draft blog pieces, case studies, or papers to share insights and promote UIL’s work.
- User Insights Hub Development: Support the development of UIL’s prototype User Insights Hub, a repository for data and research.
- Meetings and Learning Opportunities: Participate in team meetings, all-staff meetings, stakeholder interviews, internal webinars, and other learning opportunities.

Essential Functions
- Identify and synthesize multidisciplinary evidence to inform UIL’s work through literature reviews, third-party report consolidation, and data analysis.
- Develop artifacts to present data and insights from research to stakeholders.
- Draft thought leadership content, including blog pieces, case studies, and papers.
- Support the development of the UIL’s User Insights Hub.
- Participate in relevant meetings and learning opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Selection Criteria
- Educational Requirements: Candidate must be enrolled in a graduate degree-granting program during the internship or be a recent graduate (within 8 months) of a graduate program.
- Relevant Degrees: Degrees in behavioral economics, psychology, international development, economics, global health, data science, business, or related fields.
- Research Skills: Experience in literature reviews, quantitative analysis, and qualitative analysis.
- Knowledge Areas: Interest in consumer insights research, behavioral science, diffusion of innovation, data analytics, customer experience, social network analysis, energy access, climate action, global health, and women’s empowerment.
- Creative Mindset: Strong initiative and a desire to learn, with excellent attention to detail.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Miro is desirable.
- Technical Requirements: Must have a personal laptop computer and access to the Internet.
- Availability: Must be available to work a maximum of 29 hours per week.
- Authorization: Must be authorized to work in the United States.
Compensation and Benefits
- Hourly Rate: $17/hour for individuals currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an associate or bachelor’s degree program; $20/hour for individuals currently enrolled in a graduate program.
- Work Environment: This position is remote, offering flexibility in work location.
