About Us
The World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF), established in 1978, is a non-commercial research institute dedicated to sustainable land use solutions with trees in the tropics and subtropics. Together with the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), ICRAF generates and shares knowledge on the vital role of trees in addressing global challenges such as climate change, food security, biodiversity loss, poverty alleviation, and social inequality. From its headquarters in Nairobi, ICRAF plays a pivotal role as a research partner in combatting desertification in the Sahel and is actively involved in initiatives like the Great Green Wall Initiative (GGWI) aimed at re-greening the Sahel region. ICRAF also supports the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative, focusing on combating global land degradation and soil fertility loss processes.

Your Role
As an Environmental Economist, your responsibilities will include:
- Representing ICRAF-CIFOR’s interests in the ELD working group on economic valuation of ecosystems and developing sustainable land use practices.
- Strengthening local partner experts’ capacities in economic analysis and evaluation methods for calculating return on investment scenarios for land use systems with trees.
- Conducting economic analyses for alternative land use systems.
- Technical management of specific research projects.
- Networking with stakeholders to promote sustainable tree utilization for improving economic, social, and ecological conditions in rural households.
Your Profile
We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:
- Academic degree in Economics linked to Agriculture, Forestry, or Environmental Management (PhD level desired).
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in economic analyses of soil restoration projects.
- Relevant working experience in Africa.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and French, including scientific writing and presentation skills.
- Ability and motivation to work in diverse, multi-disciplinary, and multi-cultural teams.
